Sanjay Dutt, John sing for Zinda

Sanjay F Gupta’s latest film, Zinda, starring Sanjay Dutt, John Abraham, Lara Dutta, Celina Jaitley and Mahesh Manjrekar, is a song-less thriller, but the film’s audio album features songs sung by Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham.

Talking about the album, the director says, “Rocking music is something my films are associated with, so I couldn’t give it a miss in Zinda. It has been a tremendous experience creating the music for a thriller; however, the tracks have not been incorporated in the film.”

Sanju’s my Bob Dylan

Sanjay has been a lucky mascot for the director, and makes a third attempt singing, after Kaante and Musafir. The track, Kabhi muskurana, is a solo number, which Dutt has co-composed with music directors Vishal and Shekhar.

Says the director, “Sanju has an attitude and style like that of Bob Dylan. We had extensive discussions over the style of arrangement and orchestra that can cater to the needs of his voice.”

Says Dutt, “It’s like a tradition for me to sing in all of Sanjay Gupta’s films. I have lived up to my practice yet again, with Zinda.”

John’s got a good voice

The second track, Yeh hai meri kahaani (sung by Faisal Kapadia and Bilal Maqsood of popular Pakistani band, Strings), also has Dutt mouthing a few lines, while John Abraham has done a voiceover.

Says Gupta, “It was quite challenging for John, as the idea was not to rap, but to deliver words on musical cues and beats.

He’s done an awesome job and I’m very happy with the way the song has turned out. It’s ironical; John, who has such a nice voice, was dubbed in Jism.”

Talking about their experience while recording the song, Faisal says, “We had discussions about the style of the song before the recording. Sanjay finished it at one go.”

Says Dutt, “Singing for this song was a lot of fun, as I had talented singers, Bilal and Faisal, jamming with me.”

Club version

DJ Nikhil Chinappa, along with a team of musicians from London, is remixing and reproducing a club version of individual tracks. Adds Gupta, “We started this trend with Musafir; from now on, all my film songs will have club and lounge versions.”

Different promo

A special five-minute video of the track, Yeh hai meri kahaani, airs on MTV on November 20, kicking off the promotional campaign for the film, which releases on January 13 next year. This is the first time that a Bollywood film campaign will start with a music video, shot in an old recording studio, without any film visuals.

Says Gupta, “I intend to confuse viewers with a music video commencing the campaign, instead of teasers and clippings. Watch out for the album; it does not follow any norms, and has been shot in black and white, in keeping with the feel of the movie.”
